I would like to put this out there… does anyone know of a singer who has decided to act that actually has talent in the last decade? When I think about singers who have attempted to join the acting world, I think of singers like Mariah Carey and her epic movie “Glitter” or there is Brittney Spears and that must see flick (completely kidding) “Crossroads”.
Whitney Houston may be the only singer I can think of that was decent in a movie, but then again the “Bodyguard” was filmed a long time ago and had a fantastic cast including Kevin Costner. Mandy Moore however, is a B rated singer, and her flicks are not much better then that in my opinion (minus “Because I said So”).
So back to my main question, are there any good singers who can break into the acting world with a decent flick in today’s society? In my opinion I don’t think that there is. When I hear of singers making deals to make movies I always say to myself “I won’t be seeing that movie”. Stereotypical, yes. But then again, if I am going to be paying $12.00 for 2 hours of entertainment it has to be good (not including the cost of candy and of course that $3.00 bottle of water).
So in conclusion, I just thought I would post my thought and see if anyone has anything to say about it! Talk to you all later!!!
If you haven’t seen this movie (Glitter), I do not suggest it. Here is the trailor:
Well how about Lauryn hill! In sister act 2, thats really the only one I can think of right now, but I think there have been others. I totally see what you mean though, sometimes I wish a singer would just stay a singer, and an actor would just stay an actor.
Great blog!
When reading your blog, Reba was the first singer-then-actor to come to mind. I love her self-titled sitcom. I am not sure if she has done any movies but she has been quite successful on broadway. I also recall P. Diddy in Monster Ball, sure his part was short but I thought he was great. For any more examples I am stumped. But you are right the general movement of singer to actor is usually not a successful one.
My friend and I have an affinity for HORRIBLE movies and Glitter just happens to be one of them lol. It’s just soooo bad that it’s hilarious! So is Gigli. I think everyone should see Gigli at least once. It’s brutal but awesomely so. I hate the whole music to acting transition and vice versa. It just seems like a ploy for more money. I can’t remember which movie he was in, but Gavin Rossdale had a really good role in a movie. He was a bad guy… I have no clue which one.
And about the comment you left me about country music, i listen to everything but country actually. And actually everything, from Avril to Alexisonfire to Chet Baker to Josh Groban to Fall Out Boy to Jay-Z…. i could go on. My ipod is a huge mishmash of randomness. I do have 3 country songs on it though! Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood, Great Day to Be Alive by some guy I don’t know, and that BBQ stain one by Tim McGraw haha. the last 2 are more for memory purposes and I don’t really listen to them. But they’re there nonetheless!!!
